Welcome

Senior Salute • Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2011 • 1:00 - 3:00 pm • Going back to School
Children on the Prairies often had to travel great distances from home to the schoolhouse. These difficult trips were often made on horseback during the early hours of the morning. We will have a look at a California saddle used by the Force from 1878-1922; a Colonial pattern saddle used from 1946-1970; a horse bit and reins and a horse blanket. Do you have any special stories to share about a favourite horse, grooming duties, saddle sores? Please come and share your memories with us. After refreshments participants are invited to test their skills at indoor horseshoe-tossing.

Staying warm in winter requires a lot of ingenuity, determination and the right equipment! We will discuss the meaning of the Hudson Bay Company's two green four point blankets and how they were used by members of the Force. Keeping warm starts at the skin; we'll be looking at RCMP issue pure woolen underwear from the 1950's and 60's. Do you have any special stories to share on keeping warm? After enjoying refreshments, participants will be entertained by musician Bernadette Kutarno and invited to take part in singing some old-fashioned, bone-warming songs.

Senior Salute • Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011 • 1:00 - 3:00 pm • The Catalogue
For members of the Force posted to isolated detachments throughout the country, the Sears Catalogue was much more than a convenient method of shopping. As Edgar A. Guest poignantly wrote in his poem ‘The Catalog': "On lonely nights I bring them dreams and fancies and a wealth of real delights. For often when the day is done and duty's flags are furled I take the family shopping ‘round the markets of the world." We will look at excerpts from a 1908 Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalogue and participants will be invited to share their recollections of catalogue shopping. After refreshments, participants are invited to take part in a game of hoop toss.

Senior Salute •  Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011 • 1:00 - 3:00 pm • Cookbooks, Recipes and Household Hints
On remote and lonely detachments, RCMP members' wives played many important roles. Amongst other duties, they would cook meals for the prisoners. We will have a closer look at some cookbooks used by Sgt. Andrew Seaman's wife. Cookbooks with pertinently suitable names such as ‘A Friend in Need' or ‘Magic Recipes, Quicker, Easier Surer to Succeed'. We will have a look at traditional RCMP Christmas menues and traditions. And then we'd like to hear from you; your favourite recipe, the best household hint ... After refreshments, participants are invited to take part in starting their own scrapbooks with shared recipes and hints.
