Donating an Object to the RCMP Historical Collections Unit

The RCMP Historical Collections Unit receives offers of hundreds of objects each year.  There are three separate types of collections where items may be donated:
a) RCMP Historical Collection - artifacts of historical significance to the Force
b) Outreach Collection - objects that are available for circulation
c) Library Collection - Reference materials, research files and books used to assist with research of the Force

The RCMP Historical Collection requires the highest level of documentation and care.  Due to this, specific criteria are used when considering whether an object will be accepted as part of the RCMP Historical Collection in accordance to the RCMP Historical Collection Policy (2009). Copies of this policy are available upon request.

Before donating an object, we recommend making an appointment with the Manager or the Curator of the RCMP Historical Collections Unit to discuss the object and its provenance. A Donation Application Form should be completed providing as much information about the object(s) as possible. Photographs of the object may be requested in advance of the appointment.

After review of the application, the donor will be notified whether the object will be accepted and if so, in which collection. 

Items left for the RCMP Historical Collections Unit  or at the RCMP Heritage Centre without previous consultation is done at the donor's risk and will either be disposed of or returned at the owner's expense.
