Photo: Heidi AllredThe development of the new RCMP Heritage Centre provided an exciting opportunity for creative collaboration among several renowned Canadian design firms. Building design originated with the principal design provided by Arthur Erickson Architects and Nick Milkovich Architects Inc. of Vancouver, with local coordination provided by P3Architecture of Regina. At the 2007 Premier's Design Awards, P3 Architecture, Arthur Erickson and Nick Milkovich Architects Inc. received the Premier's Award of Excellence in Architecture for their work on the RCMP Heritage Centre.
Exhibit design was led by Montreal-based planners and designers Design+Communication Inc. Building construction was led by PCL Construction Management.
This highly skilled, multidisciplinary team has created a world-class visitor experience including a unique, environmentally friendly building, extensive exhibition galleries, interactive media, a multimedia theatre and a variety of on-site interpretation services. Designed as an integrated whole, the site, building and galleries of the new RCMP Heritage Centre offer a compelling, entertaining and educational experience that will enthrall visitors of all ages and backgrounds, who will come to better understand both the distinguished history and the wide range of activities carried out by one of the world's great police forces.
In the first phase of development, the RCMP Heritage Centre features 10,000 square feet of permanent exhibit galleries, the 2,500-square foot, 124 seat SGI CANADA Theatre, home to a custom-designed multimedia show Tour of Duty, a 2,800 sq. ft. community programming room, and a 2,000 sq. ft. temporary exhibit gallery. The second phase will add a further 8,000 square feet of themed exhibits in the main exhibit hall, as well as exciting outdoor interpretive elements, enhanced education programming, and a range of additional architectural elements to complete this breathtaking building.
