Through the use of natural materials such as Tyndall Stone and red cedar, Arthur Erickson's design speaks to the North-West Mounted Police's critical role in the opening of the Canadian west. It was a time when NWMP posts sprang up across the prairies as the Force embarked on what has become more than 134 years of service to Canada. The east face of the building, where the roof reaches toward the sky, is reflective of today's RCMP - a modern police force that is committed to serving Canadian communities and the world both today and in the future.
Our prairie landscaping design will take close to three (3) years to mature. Reminiscent of the early NWMP posts, a wooden stockade wall flanking either side of the main walkway will be installed soon. The main landscaping element is a seeded native prairie grass mix comprised of seven (7) different grasses such as Canada Wildrye, Purple Prairie Clover and Blue Gramma. In time, this grass will grow to approximately 1 m (3 ft) in height. In addition to the grasses, a wildflower and grass mix featuring such flowers as Prairie Coneflower and Spurred Snapdragon is planted next to the building sign and along the sidewalk at the Dewdney Avenue entranceway.
Framing the building along the front face at the east side of the walkway is a large grouping of deciduous trees that provide shade to the patio. A colourful flower bed of perennials is tucked in beside the patio on the east face. The main walkway is bordered by Pasqueflowers while the west end of the building features a selection of coniferous trees and deciduous shrubs.
